How to Make Natural Cough Syrups

I came across some old recipes for natural cough remedies my mother had documented back in the 70s.

Things You'll Need:

for the first syrup:

2 tablespoons diced onion

1/2 cup honey

for the second:

1/2 cup sunflower seeds

5 cups water

3/4 cup gin

1/2 cup sugar

1

Mix the ingredients in a glass bowl and microwave on low/med. for 10 minutes, rotate, and microwave on low for 30 minutes.

2

Strain the mixture through a coffee filter and discard the onion pulp

3

Allow the syrup to come to room temperature before using and store at room temp. for 1-2 months.

4

For the second syrup:

Pour the water and sunflower seeds in a microwaveable bowl and microwave on high for 4 minutes and then on medium for 4 more minutes or until water is reduced to 2 cups.

Strain the juice, discarding the seeds.

5

Stir in the gin and sugar and store in a tightly capped container.

6

For both syrups:

Adults should take 1-2 teaspoons every 4 hours. If cough persists, or if there is a fever, call the doctor.
